Position sizing and daily loss limits for short-term trading

Fixed-payout trades still need a budget. Simple rules to avoid doubling down and to survive losing streaks.

Short expiries tempt revenge trading. Risk rules matter even when each trade has a capped loss.

The 1–2% guideline

Many educators suggest risking no more than 1–2% of dedicated trading capital on a single binary position. On a $500 learning account, that is $5–10 per ticket — which aligns with common minimum stakes.

Daily stop

Set a daily loss cap (e.g. 5% of account) and stop when hit — close the laptop. Platforms with tournaments and streak bonuses are designed to keep you clicking.

Separate “learning” vs “serious” pots

Keep micro-test money in an account you are willing to zero while evaluating a broker. Only combine pots after withdrawal tests pass.

Leveraged CFDs are not binaries

If you also trade CFDs (see brokers with CFD markets), margin math differs — use stop-loss orders and monitor margin level intraday.

Checklist before each session

  • Sleep / focus OK?
  • Economic calendar checked?
  • Payout % on ticket matches expectation?
  • Stake size within plan?

Discipline is the edge when payout math is stacked against high frequency.
